Workshop "Citizen Science for Water Quality"
VUB campus - Jun 02, 2025
Citizen Science is a collaborative approach
that actively involves communities in scientific research, generating knowledge
and driving local action. In the context of sustainability, it empowers
individuals, particularly those directly affected by environmental challenges, to
participate in data collection, analysis, and decision-making. Engaging local
communities in scientific inquiry strengthens the understanding of critical
issues such as water quality, biodiversity, and climate resilience while
fostering environmental stewardship. Bridging science and society, Citizen
Science enables communities to identify challenges, co-develop solutions, and
advocate for informed policies, advancing sustainability through inclusive
knowledge production, behavioral change, and long-term environmental
management.
The VUB Department of Water and Climate will
host the “Citizen Science Water Quality” Workshop on June 2nd. The event will
bring together researchers and actors from Belgium and partner (University of
Rwanda, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology -JOOUST- in
Kenya, Universidad Católica Boliviana -UCB- in Bolivia, and Universidad Central
"Marta Abreu" de las Villas -UCLV) in Cuba to share their experiences
and insights on Citizen Science for water quality.
We welcome additional contributions from
researchers, practitioners, and community members. If you are interested in
presenting at the symposium, you can submit your application here.
